Wholesale Backpack Brands vs Manufacturer-Direct: How to Choose (2026)

There are four ways to buy backpacks wholesale: a distributor account with a well-known brand, direct from a manufacturer, through a trading company, or from a wholesale marketplace. Each one trades brand recognition against margin, minimum order and control. This guide compares them so you can pick the right source before you compare individual brands.

Option 1: A distributor account with a name brand

Brands such as JanSport, SWISSGEAR, Herschel and Samsonite sell to retailers through distributor or dealer accounts. The appeal is simple: shoppers already know the name, so the bags sell with less explaining.

The trade-offs are the margin and the rules. Name brands usually set a minimum advertised price, approve where you sell, and ask for an opening order and a credit application. Your margin is whatever is left between their wholesale price and the retail price they set. Terms change often, so get current figures from each brand's trade team rather than from a blog.

Option 2: Direct from a manufacturer

Buying from the factory removes one or two layers of markup, so the unit price is lower and the margin is yours to set. You can usually add your logo, choose colours and set your own retail price.

What you give up is the famous name on the label, and you take on more of the planning: minimum quantities per model, production and shipping time, and import costs unless the price is delivered. A good factory will quote a delivered (DDP) price and tell you the transit time in writing.

Option 3: A trading company

A trading company buys from several factories and sells to you. It can be useful when you want many product types from one invoice. The catch is that you often can't see which factory made the goods, quality can change between orders, and the trading company adds its own margin.

Ask any supplier who actually makes the bag. With a factory-direct brand the answer is the brand itself.

Option 4: Wholesale marketplaces and dropshipping

Marketplaces let you buy small quantities or have single orders shipped straight to your customers. It's the lowest-risk way to test a product. Unit prices are higher, delivery times vary by seller, and you have little control over packaging or quality.

What to compare, whichever route you choose

Minimum order. Per model, per colour, or per order? It changes how many styles you can afford to stock.

Delivered cost. Unit price plus freight, duties and clearance. Compare this, never the unit price alone.

Lead time. Production plus transit, confirmed in writing.

Payment terms. Deposit on the first order, and whether credit terms open up later.

Customisation. Logo, colours and packaging, and the quantity each one needs.

Reorders. How quickly the same model can be restocked once it sells.

BANGE: a manufacturer-direct option

BANGE makes its own backpacks and sells wholesale direct from the factory. We've shipped over 2 million backpacks worldwide. Stock orders start at 50 pieces per model, a custom logo or colourway starts at 300 pieces, and pricing goes up to 63% off retail at the top volume tier.

First orders are paid with a 50% deposit, and Net-30 terms are available from the second order. In the USA, best sellers ship from our California warehouse. Orders to the UK and the EU ship DDP from the factory, 7 to 10 working days by air or 4 to 5 weeks by sea, with duties included.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy from a manufacturer than a brand distributor?
Usually the unit price is lower, because there are fewer layers of markup. Compare delivered costs, since import charges can close the gap if the manufacturer's price isn't DDP.
Can I sell a manufacturer's bags under my own brand?
With most factories, yes. At BANGE a custom logo starts at 300 pieces per model.
Which backpack categories sell best wholesale?
Everyday laptop backpacks sell in the highest volume. Anti-theft models with USB ports and expandable travel backpacks carry higher prices and margins.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes. We send a paid sample with shipping included, and the cost is usually deducted from your bulk order when you go ahead.
