What makes a backpack shed water at all
A backpack's weather protection comes from three things stacked together: the fabric's coating, the fabric's density, and how the openings are sealed. Miss any one of the three and water finds it.
✅ Coatings do the real waterproofing. Uncoated fabric — even thick fabric — wicks water through the weave. A PVC coating laminates a continuous plastic film onto the fabric, making the panel itself essentially impermeable; that's the construction on the Coreva 1908. What the ratings actually mean
Two systems appear on gear labels. IPX ratings (IPX4, IPX6…) test water spray: IPX4 means splash-resistant from any direction, IPX6 means it withstands powerful jets. Hydrostatic head (e.g. 1,500 mm) measures the water-column pressure a fabric resists before leaking — 1,500 mm is a common threshold for calling a fabric waterproof. What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant backpacks?
