How airline size limits actually work

✅ Depth is the dimension that fails you. Most backpacks are comfortably under the 55 cm height limit — it's the 20–25 cm depth allowance that an overstuffed front pocket blows past. When you compare bags below, look at the middle number first.

✅ Measure packed, and measure expanded. An expandable bag's spec sheet usually shows the compressed size. Airlines measure the bag in front of them, not the brochure — if you fly with the expansion zip open, that's the size that counts.

✅ On budget airlines, the free bag is the under-seat bag. Ryanair and Wizz Air include only a 40 × 30 × 20 cm personal item for free. The familiar 55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin bag costs extra (Priority or a bag add-on). None of the travel backpacks in this guide fit the 40 cm free allowance — budget for the paid cabin bag or size down.
